Your guide provides you with a helmet and light before leading you into the tunnel. Listen as they point out some of the tunnel’s most interesting features and learn about the changing colors of the lava rock formations as you walk. Large rocks make the tunnel difficult to traverse in some places, but a footbridge and several paths have been built over the roughest terrain. Lights have also been incorporated in order to highlight the changing colors and clearly show the powerful volcanic activity that formed the tunnel during the Leitahraun eruption, which occurred around 5,200 years ago. After your tour ends you are free to make your own way back to Reykjavik or onto your next destination.

The Lava Tunnel is a very impressive place to visit. The knowledgeable and friendly guide (I think he was named Dimitris) explained to us more about the geology of Iceland and then we entered the cave to look at its colourful interior. Our overall time within the cave wasn't that much and the overall experience was less than an hour.

Very personal and immersive experience with a knowledgeable guide. Highly recommend. Not too strenuous, be sure to upgrade your tour if you want to do some climbing.

We had a wonderful tour guide who gave a very informative lecture. Unfortunately the tour was much shorter than we expected (length down the cave not time) and the colours are not as bright as in the pictures. It is an interesting and very worthwhile excursion but price is a little steep and please keep your expectations under control.

Very accessible and otherworldly experience. There are some stairs involved, that an elderly person could not do near the end. There are ice sculptures that grow upwards, interesting colors and textures on the cave walls. The skylights and colored lights make for some pretty good photo opportunities too! It's also very informative.

The Lava Tunnel team did a great job on all accounts. Everything was well run and the staff exceptionally friendly. A must do if you visit Iceland. If you drive yourself, take time to explore the southern coast. Exceptional sights and experiences!

This was a shorter but fun tour. You got a lot of educational tid bits about the colors in the tunnel and what minerals caused it. It was gorgeous. The guide, Frodi Snarrason or Frodo for short, was very energetic and seemed to genuinely love educating and exposing the intricacies of lava tunnels. He was very personable and passionate. There were plenty of opportunities to take pictures and ask questions. The path was fairly easy. We did not have children with us but it would not be difficult if you did have children.

We did this tour after arrival at the airport at KEF. We were a family of 6, kids to grandparents. It was a wonderful way to start our Icelandic holiday. Our tour guide was great at waiting for the whole group to gather (with our masks on!) to talk about the interesting facts about the cave. The spot lighting in the cave is beautiful and accents the natural highlights. We loved the total darkness on the platform at the end. I highly recommend. The cave is cold (always same temperature year round), but without wind, it was warmer than outside at the end of December! They provided helmets and crampons, but it was just like walking over metal bridges/platforms and a lot of rocks. This is our third lava tunnel (two others were in Hawaii and Oregon in USA) and still really impressive.

You should be able to, yeah. There are a number of bus services that'll take you there. Reykjavik Excursions, Reykjavik Sightseeing, and Gray Line all come to mind.

How long are the lights out for? I don't get claustrophobic if my head and shoulders don't touch the walls, but if the lights are out for more than 60 seconds I would not want to chance getting that closed in feeling!

The lights are out for a few minutes,but you're standing on a wooden walkway, in a large cavern,with railings nearby. No one in our group of about 20-25 people had any problem with the darkness. The guide continued his narration while the lights were out.
